Here at GEI Plumbing Services we have assisted a plethora of homeowners with the comparison of condensing vs. non-condensing tankless water heaters. The choice usually boils down to installation cost, energy efficiency and savings in the long run. Both of these tanks heat water but the heating process inside the tank is what differentiates the two.

Non-Condensing Water Heater
A non-condensing water heater uses something called a single heat exchanger. This is used to heat up the water as it flows through the unit. Even though it works well, it can lead to heat loss because any heat that remains after the water is heated is vented outside and can lead to energy being wasted. With that being said, even though non-condensing units are not as energy efficient they do have a lower cost upfront as well as simpler vent requirements for customers on a budget. .
Condensing Tankless Water Heater
On the other hand, a condensing tankless water heater uses not one but two heat exchangers. The first one is responsible for heating up the water like a non-condensing unit. The difference is in what is done with that extra heat that is left over. A condensing unit will capture that extra heat and use it to preheat water for later. This improves the efficiency overall by reducing the waste of energy as well as lowering energy costs over time.
Even though condensing water heaters have great energy efficiency savings they do have a higher initial cost. That second heat exchanger and the internal design that is more complex means that it will come with a higher upfront cost. The unit may even require maintenance due to excess condensation during the heating process. Many homeowners do believe that the long term savings on their energy bill is worth the higher purchase price upfront and maintenance.
The choice between a condensing and non-condensing tankless water heater depends on your long term goals and budget. If you are wanting the maximum efficiency and low energy bills over time, a condensing unit is best. If you have a budget for upfront costs but energy costs over time are not a concern then a non-condensing unit is best.
