What your Water Heater Does (and What Can Go Wrong)
Every time your water heater fires up the temperature of the water rises inside the system. As the water heats up naturally it expands. In an enclosed plumbing system the extra volume has nowhere to go unless there is a water heater expansion tank there to absorb it.

Why an Expansion Tank Matters
The purpose of the water expansion tank is that it gives the expanded water somewhere to go. The way it works is, it’s connected to the cold water line and it has a pressurised air bladder that absorbs the excess water pressure as the water heats. This is to keep your plumbing system balanced and it reduces strain on the internal components of your water heater.
Most homeowners opt in for this upgrade as it can prevent costly damage. In some cases it is required by plumbing code, especially when pressure reducing valves or backflow preventers are installed. Even if you see your current plumbing system to be working fine, a failing / missing expansion tank can lead to expensive damage down the line because the problems do not show up until the damage has occurred.

When to Repair, Replace, or Upgrade your Water Heater
Water heaters do not last forever. 8 – 10 years is the time frame where many systems start to lose efficiency or show signs of wear and tear. Regardless if you’re seeing rusty water, noticing your hot water runs out faster than usual, or random rumbling sounds from your tank it could be reaching the end of its life.
Once you get to this point, a replacement is definitely the wiser option especially if you are thinking about going the tankless water heater route. Even with a new water heater unit installing a water heater expansion tank can protect your water heater from pressure spikes that can wear it down from the inside.
